Car route King Johann - Experience Saarburg, Klause and Saar loop

The round trip leads you from Saarburg through the Leukbach valley, past the Kastel Klause, to the Cloef viewpoint in Orscholz. Then continue via Mettlach and the Saar valley back.

You can reach Saarburg via the B 51 or the B 407.

The route starts in Saarburg at the City parking lot and follows along the B407, through the romantic Leukbach valley, continuing via Trassem to Kastel-Staadt. The plateau high above the Saar has been designated as a monument zone and excavation protection area since 1997 due to its historical significance. A highlight of German Romanticism is the Klause. The Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV had his architect Schinkel build the Holy Sepulchre Church here at this uniquely scenic spot for the blind King Johann of Bohemia. Right next to the Klause are a Roman theatre, an honorary cemetery, and the "Old Village Church" from the 12th century. The eventful history of the place can best be experienced during a circular walk along the archaeological trail. You now take the return route through the village and head towards Freudenburg. As varied as the surrounding landscape is also the history of Freudenburg. In the 14th century, King Johann of Bohemia, Count of Luxembourg, built the Freudenburg castle complex to secure his possessions at the foot of the 440 m high Eiderberg. The castle ruins, neck ditch, and castle gate are still preserved today. Via Weiten, you reach Orscholz. From the "Cloef," you have a magnificent view of the famous Saar loop in Mettlach. Now follow the signs to Mettlach. The town is known for the Villeroy & Boch ceramics factory. The experience center houses Keravision with a documentary on the development history of the global company as well as the museum with ceramic products. A stroll through the outlet shops is also recommended. The car route leads along the B51 through the romantic Saar valley. Behind Saarhölzbach, the landscape changes, and forest slopes alternate with steep vineyard slopes. Serrig is the first wine town from the southern direction and is therefore called the "Gateway to Saar wine." The dam with a fall height of 14.50 m is the highest lock in Germany on a natural river course. At the estate (through the village, follow the signs), round trips are offered with a reactivated field railway. In addition, you can buy self-produced products from agriculture as well as from the production sites (pottery, carpentry, and basket weaving) in the estate shop. If you still have some time, you should plan a detour to the "Beautiful View" lookout point. For this, follow the K139 through the forest area "Neunhäuser Wald" to the visitor parking lot. The detour is rewarded with a unique panoramic view of the "Hammer Loop" into the Saar valley. From Serrig, continue your circular drive along the B51 through the Saar valley back to the starting point Saarburg. Visit the waterfall in the middle of the old town and the castle complex.
