What’s the best way to get to the Mosel, and how can I get about once I’m there? Whether by car, train, bike or without a vehicle at all – the Mosel offers plenty of options for a relaxed journey and varied excursions. To ensure your holiday at the Mosel gets off to a stress-free start, we’ve put together some practical information here on getting there, public transport, cycling, driving, boat trips and getting around locally.

Travelling by car or motorhome is the most convenient option for many guests. You can reach the various holiday regions along the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer via the motorway and main roads from Koblenz, Trier, Luxembourg, Cologne, Saarbrücken or Frankfurt.

Depending on where you’re spending your holiday at the Mosel, a different route is recommended. The final few kilometres in particular often take you through idyllic Mosel villages, vineyards and narrow river valleys.

If you’re planning a holiday at the Mosel without a car, or simply want to leave your car behind for a while during your stay, you can reach many destinations easily by public transport. Buses and trains connect numerous towns along the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer rivers and offer a relaxed way to explore the region.

Whether it’s a trip to a neighbouring wine village, the starting point for a hike or the return journey after a cycle ride – buses and trains allow you to combine many activities flexibly.

As timetables, terms and conditions of carriage and rules on carrying bicycles are regularly updated, we recommend checking the latest information before your journey. Look out for notices such as ‘bicycles permitted’ and check with the relevant transport authority or railway company regarding ticket requirements, restricted times and booking options.

The Public Transport Guest Ticket is your free travel pass for the Mosel, Saar and Ruwer regions (depending on your accommodation, within the VRT or VRM area). It entitles you to free travel on buses and regional trains in 2nd class throughout your stay. The ticket is usually valid from your day of arrival until your day of departure and is issued directly by your accommodation.

For guests travelling from further afield, there are several airports in the region that may be of interest. From there, you can reach the Moselle by hire car, train or taxi.

The nearest airports are Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN), Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) and Luxembourg Airport (LUX). Which airport is most suitable depends on your point of departure and your exact holiday destination.

A boat trip on the Moselle is not only a destination in its own right, but can also – depending on the timetable – be an interesting way to combine visits to different places.

Discover the region from the water and combine a boat trip with, for example, a walk or a cycle ride. This way, you can cover part of the route by boat and then continue on foot or by bike.

Cruises are also an attractive option for round trips and excursions to popular wine-growing villages.
