When the towns along the Moselle are transformed into a sea of colour and cheerful music fills the streets, one of the most exuberant times of the year begins: Carnival. Amidst historic half-timbered houses, wintry vineyards and bustling town centres, people celebrate, sway to the music and laugh – sometimes in traditional style, sometimes surprisingly modern, but always with a genuine zest for life.
Each town has its own unique carnival character – and, above all, its own carnival chant. In Trier, “Halaudi” and “maju” ring out through the streets; in the holiday region of Bernkastel-Kues, revellers greet one another with “Hajo”; and in Saarburg, the powerful cry of “Hau Ruck” is at home. And in Koblenz, the revellers cheer with their unmistakable cry of “Kowelenz Olau”.
As well as colourful street parades, there are numerous events to look forward to: atmospheric carnival gatherings, humorous carnival speeches, colourful carnival parades and plenty of opportunities to experience the local culture first-hand. The picturesque backdrops of the old towns, combined with the special atmosphere of the vineyards in winter, lend each event its own distinctive character.
