Here on the Hochwald heights near Lorscheid, the 6.8-kilometer trail circles the municipality of Lorscheid. Along the way, we can repeatedly enjoy views and distant vistas of the various neighboring communities. Along the trail, you’ll find orchard meadows with informative signs, a biotope featuring over 100 different plant species, and habitats for insects and small animals.
At various points along the trail, shortcuts are available, which are also signposted with kilometer markers. For example, if you skip the signposted “Büchelsbergrunde,” you’ll circle the Hochwald community on a 4.3-kilometer route. This way, everyone can find the ideal route for themselves. Rest areas with amenities for children—such as two playgrounds, a barbecue shelter, and a soccer field—make the trail particularly attractive for families.
We recommend the parking lot at the village hall in Lorscheid as a starting point; there you’ll find plenty of free parking spaces. From here, you can also set out on any other route around Lorscheid (e.g., the “Traumschleife Römer-Keltenpfad” loop, the LO2 circular hiking trail).

The bus stop at the daycare center is right at the starting point of the loop trail.
From the parking lot at the village hall, the trail heads northward up the hills above Lorscheid. After just under 500 m, we reach a small rest area at the Meirather Kreuz, where there is a sign explaining the history of the former settlement of Meirath near Lorscheid. At this intersection, you can continue the trail in a northeasterly direction or take the first shortcut to the west toward the barbecue hut.
The path to the northeast continues and turns right onto a sandy trail leading to the Lorscheid water house. From there, the route follows a paved road to the first orchard meadow, which lies slightly off to the left. Here, an information board provides details about the many different tree species that have been planted here. The trail continues to the next orchard meadow with a bench. Here, too, we find interesting information about the varieties of apples and nuts that have been planted.
After another short stretch, we reach a biotope area with over 100 different plant species and various habitats for insects and small animals, such as deadwood boxes, an insect hotel, and a nature shelter.
The trail then leads back toward Meirather Kreuz, which we reach again after a total of 2.8 km.
From here, the trail leads toward the barbecue hut. There is an ideal rest area there with play facilities for children. The trail continues through a small wooded area back toward the village. In the village, we reach the intersection with Hauptstraße, where the local restaurants are located. From here, the trail leads to the children’s playground with the newly built hiking hut, a great spot to rest and relax.
To return to the starting point, the route runs below the village along a nature trail, then through Mühlenweg and Waldstraße back to the parking lot.
As a general rule, you enter the forest and walk on the trails at your own risk. Depending on the season and weather conditions, some sections of the trails may require extra caution to ensure sure footing. Therefore, please wear clothing appropriate for the season and weather, as well as hiking boots with adequate tread.
