Dreis circular hiking trail no. 6 "Sauscheid"

This tour leads along the idyllic Salmbach stream and through various forest passages to "Sauscheid", a plateau between Salmbach and Gladbach. The varied nature and beautiful views make this hike an entertaining experience.

From the Dreyshalle, the path first heads west, passes the Schorbach stream and then follows Römerstraße straight ahead in a northerly direction. At the end of Römerstraße, turn left into the street "Im Gartenfeld". At the next crossroads, continue straight ahead. Along the Salm, "Salmstraße" leads to "Brückenstraße". Turn left there and just after the bridge, turn right onto a narrow path, the "Brucher Piedchen" (sometimes also known as the "Dreiser Pfädchen"). Now walk upstream along the Salm. At the "Landhaus Kasfeld", a narrow path branches off sharply to the left and leads quite steeply uphill through the forest to a wide forest path. Keep right there and walk north-west along the forest path. The Eifelsteig adventure loops "Meulenwaldroute" and "Säubrennerroute" run parallel to the hiking trail here. After approx. 1 km, go straight ahead for approx. 80 m at the fork in the path, then turn left and hike uphill in serpentines to the highest point of the tour at 312 m. Here you reach the wooded "Sauscheid" plateau. The "Sauscheider Weg" now runs quite flat in a southerly direction and remains at an altitude of over 300 m for the next 800 meters. Shortly before the path descends again towards Dreis, you will see a few concrete steps with railings on the right-hand side. These lead a few meters uphill to the "Sauscheidkreuz", an almost 3-meter-high Bittkreuz. Originally dating from 1914, the cross fell into disrepair over time and was rebuilt in 2014 by the Dreis "wayside crosses" working group. At the next junction, hikers keep half left and continue slightly downhill until they come across an old sandstone cross (accident cross) dating from 1746. Now turn left onto the "Alter Dodenburger Weg" and continue downhill. Directly after the shooting range, the path branches off to the left. The path now leads slightly uphill on asphalt to the "Waldhotel Sonnora". North of the hotel, at a signpost, a narrow path branches off to the right and leads steeply downhill back to the Salmbrücke bridge. From up here you have a wonderful view of Dreis with its village church and castle. From the Salm bridge, walk along the familiar path first through Salmstraße, then turn half right into the street "Im Gartenfeld" back towards Dreyshalle. At a green electricity distribution box "Im Gartenfeld", the hiking trail branches off to the right into a gravel path, which then turns into a meadow path and leads the hiker through the "Salmpark" back to the parking lot. There are several places to sit and relax in the "Salmpark".

The tour is adequately signposted with the "Dr6" logo and can be walked in both directions.

Special care is required on the first 400 meters of the "Brucher Piedchen" (narrow path, steep slope in places towards the Salm) in the event of rain, snowfall or icy conditions.

If this section of the path is temporarily closed for safety reasons, it can be bypassed as follows: Walk into town along Brückenstraße and then turn left into Mühlenstraße towards Bruch. At the former mill, cross the Mühlengraben on the left and walk along the gravel path along the Mühlengraben to a wooden bridge. Cross the bridge over the Salm river and return to the signposted path.

Dreis is one of the oldest villages in the Wittlich region, is old German and means sour well. For around 1000 years, the picturesque village belonged to Echternach Abbey and was part of Luxembourg. Beautiful sights still bear witness to this today, such as the imposing castle and many restored wayside crosses. Numerous circular hiking trails, marked by dedicated Dreis residents, offer hikers a comprehensive experience of nature and culture.
