Family-friendly hiking route Nittel rock path

Exciting path along the Nittel rocks on the Upper Moselle. The circular route runs mostly on rocky trails. Climbing fun for little explorers behind every next bend!

You can reach Nittel via the B419.

Nittel is located on the DB route Wittlich-Trier-Perl.

Start and finish is the train station in Nittel. Your hike leads you through the "Weinstraße" to the corner "In der Gessel." From there, follow the signs "N3." After a short walk, you reach the sculpture "Knee with Joint." Here you will find a good view, beautiful photo opportunities, diverse play and climbing options, and a nice rest and picnic spot. Together with the Moselsteig, it then goes uphill through the vineyards, getting closer and closer to the rocks. From afar, the limestone cliff was already impressive. Up close, the rocks appear gigantic. The path meanders along under the cliff until you walk downhill to the left at a vineyard and reach the vineyard path via stairs. The road with a good view of the Moselle Valley leads in a right curve upwards to the edge of the rocks. Here stands the sandstone sculpture "Large Pointer." It marks the entrance to the actual Nittel rock path. This path always runs close to the edge of the slope – up and down over rocks and stairs with fantastic views of Nittel and the Moselle. Good footwear, surefootedness, and above all attention are required here. The end of the rock path is reached at an open meadow slope with a bench. In spring, you can admire orchids here. Please stay on the path in the nature reserve! Here is also the last viewpoint of the circular route before it steeply descends away from the Moselsteig to a road already familiar from the outward way. You walk back to the train station the same way as the outward way.

Please note that this hiking path is not a certified premium hiking trail and there is no continuous signage for the route. Furthermore, part of the path runs on asphalted farm roads and not on narrow trails.

Please make sure to wear sturdy footwear and bring enough food and drink in your backpack.

Beautiful rest areas with views and play and climbing opportunities are offered by the sandstone sculptures "Knee with Joint" and "Large Pointer." The hiking path is continuously marked with the sign "N3."
