From Karden to Eltz Castle (Red Route: Canons' Loop)

The red route of the Stiftsherrenrunde takes you from the Karden district over the Kompuskopf to the highlight, Eltz Castle.
The route follows a section of the red “Stiftsherrenweg” trail from Karden to the popular tourist destination, Eltz Castle. The trail begins at the Mosel Cathedral in Karden and initially climbs steeply uphill to the Kompuskopf lookout point, which is a great spot to take a short break and enjoy a beautiful view of the Moselle Valley. From there, the trail continues at a leisurely pace along nature trails and gravel paths along the Moselle ridge and then through the Eltz Forest to the tour’s final destination: Eltz Castle.

Highlights of the tour:

  • St. Castor Collegiate Church in Karden (Moseldom)
  • Views of the Moselle Valley from the Kompuskopf
  • View of Eltz Castle
  • Eltz Castle

Return to the starting point via the same route. Alternatively, you can return by public transportation. During the season (April 1 through November 1), bus line 365 runs from the castle’s parking lot to Hatzenport. From there, you can take the train back to the train station in Karden.

The tour begins at St. Castor’s Collegiate Church in the Karden district; it’s also worth taking a look inside. After walking a few meters through the village, a beautiful but steep ascent leads to the Kompuskopf, where hikers are rewarded with a magnificent view of the Moselle Valley. Various places to sit invite you to take a short break. You can then enjoy the vastness of the Moselle Plateau along nature trails and gravel paths until you reach the Count Eltz Forest. After a leisurely descent, you’ll catch your first glimpse of the historic Eltz Castle. Hikers pass along rugged cliffs to reach the bridge at Eltz Castle, the destination of the hike.
  • Adjust the hike to your personal fitness level and experience
  • Check the weather forecast. If there’s a risk of thunderstorms, heavy fog, or strong winds, don’t set out on a hike through forests or open terrain.
  • Stay on the marked trails. This helps protect wildlife and plants and keeps you safe from falls and getting lost.
  • Watch out for slippery surfaces, especially during or after rain
  • Know the emergency number: 112
  • Weather-appropriate, practical clothing that protects against the cold and wet or the heat and sun
  • Appropriate hiking shoes
  • enough fluids
