Holzerath is one of the highest-elevation towns in the Ruwer municipal association. This state-recognized tourist destination, located in the heart of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park and offering sweeping views of the Osburg High Forest, is very popular with hikers and nature lovers.
This local loop trail is ideal for a short hike through the extensive woodlands, which feature a charming variety of tree species.
At the start of the hike on “Hardtstraße,” we turn right toward “Bockelsheck,” passing the TV tower on our way into “Lebertswald.” After about 500 meters, an idyllic spot invites you to take in the view over Schöndorf toward Ollmuth—or simply to linger and enjoy the peace and quiet. The trail then heads downhill through the “Atzenbruch” to the “Altes Kippkreuz” before crossing the L 146 connecting road between Schöndorf and Holzerath, and then continuing on via the “Erdbeerenberg.”
Passing the “Heckelchen” (KM 2), the trail continues through the “Wachswiesen” to the “Poswies” before entering the village via “Auf den langen Wiesen” to the fire station. After a turn to the left, the loop trail leads us down the “Wiesengrund.” Passing “Eschengretchen” and through the “Schomelberg,” the trail leads to “Zeidelhuf.” After crossing the K 56 road between Bonerath and Holzerath, the trail heads uphill to the “Rudelkopf.” Behind the “Büngerten” and past the “Hahnenfelder,” the trail leads straight into the new development area “Zur Lay,” from where—on a clear day—you have a magnificent view over Schöndorf and Ollmuth all the way to Pellingen and beyond —this view more than makes up for the strenuous climb up the “Rudelkopf” to this vantage point. At the end of the road, you reach the L146, and 200 meters later, you’re back at the starting point on “Hardtstraße.”
