Lauschtour - Culture Plateau Kastel-Staadt

On the route, you walk in the footsteps of the Celts, visit a Roman theater, the honorary cemetery, and of course the famous Klause, one of the most important cultural monuments on the Saar!

The Lauschtour starts at the visitor parking lot in front of the Klause and lasts about 1 ¼ hours. Great history and magnificent views define this circular walk. For example, you learn why the Celts and Romans discovered this place for themselves. It explains what "soul holes" are and why the sarcophagus in the Klause chapel is empty today. Have fun!

Approach

From Trier, you reach Kastel-Staadt via the B 51 towards Saarburg and then via Trassem (B 407) towards Freudenburg until the Kastel-Staadt exit.

Due to its outstanding historical significance, the Kastel-Staadt plateau has been designated a monument zone and excavation protection area since 1997. From the 2nd century BC onwards, even before the Roman founding of Trier, it was one of the main settlements of the Treveri tribe, a so-called oppidum. As centres of trade, craftsmanship and public life, oppida such as Kastel were among the first city-like settlements in Central Europe.The tour begins at the visitor car park in front of the Klause and leads past the Roman theatre and the cemetery of honour to the Klause state monument. From the cross in the military cemetery, there is a unique view far into the Saar Valley and a first glimpse of the Klause.From 1 April to 31 October 2026, the Klause state monument is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In July and August, it is open until 5 p.m. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing time! Guided tours are offered from 1 April to 31 October 2026 on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:30 a.m. and on Thursdays at 2:30 p.m. (no tours from 4 May to 18 May 2026).A detour to the Elisensitz offers another view of the Saar and the Altfels.Continue along a gravel path to the Keltenwall before returning to your starting point at the old Schinkelschule via König-Johann-Straße.

Safety instructions

The path leads over asphalt, field paths, and in places, footpaths. Especially in the Klause, surefootedness is required due to the steep incline and stairs.

Tips

Combine your hike with a visit to the Klause State Monument!

From 1 April to 31 October 2026, the monument is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In July and August, it is open until 5 p.m. Last admission 30 minutes before closing time!

Guided tours are offered from 1 April to 31 October 2026 on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:30 a.m. and on Thursdays at 2:30 p.m. No guided tours from 4 May to 18 May 2026.
