Mülheim an der Mosel, famous for its renowned wines, is the official starting point of this cycling route. The town is also the gateway to one of the most beautiful side valleys of the Mosel, which is home to Veldenz and Burgen, two Mosel towns of the former County of Veldenz.

Insights into the cycling route:

From Mülheim, the route initially leads to Burgen, also known as the Little Venice of the Mosel. In the Hunsrück, not only deep forests and lush meadows await, but also beautiful villages along the way such as Gornhausen, Merscheid, Hunolstein, and Gräfendhron, with pleasant places to stop, e.g., the "Hunosteiner Hof," "Landhaus Gräfendhron," or the "Krakesmühle." From the Hunsrück, the cyclist finds themselves back at the Mosel in Neumagen-Dhron, the "oldest wine town in Germany." From there, the route passes by Piesport, Minheim, Wintrich, Kesten, and Brauneberg back to Mülheim an der Mosel.

Almost 60 km long circular route. It starts at the Mosel and leads via Veldenz and Burgen into the Hunsrück.

In Mülheim at the village exit towards Brauneberg on the B53
The route starts in Mülheim an der Mosel. Through a former riverbed of the Mosel, you cycle through vineyards to Veldenz. You leave the town on an agricultural road, partially newly constructed, towards Burgen. This town, which is not inferior to Veldenz in romantic beauty, is often called the "Little Venice of the Middle Mosel" due to its total of 19 bridges. You leave Burgen heading south on steeply ascending switchbacks and cycle through forest slopes up to a plateau. With good visibility, the view here extends far into the Eifel. The main ridge of the Hunsrück is still hidden by the nearby Haardtkopf, at whose foothills you continue after leaving the village of Gornhausen behind. Now we cycle uphill on a well-maintained forest trail to the old Roman road, which was laid out for the numerous wind turbines installed here. Then you roll further down to Merscheid. Just behind Merscheid, you reach the Dhron and the Nahe-Hunsrück-Mosel Cycle Path. This cycle path runs always within sight of the Dhron stream below Hunolstein, passing through Gräfendhron and Papiermühle back to the Mosel and meets the Mosel Cycle Path in Neumagen-Dhron. From here, it goes leisurely back along the Mosel to Mülheim.

Please note that the route is only signposted from Mülheim to Gornhausen.

Partly, the route runs on public roads (especially between Gräfendhron and Papiermühle) where increased caution is advised.
The route should be manageable with an eBike (fully charged) despite the significant climb from the Mosel valley. For sporty cyclists, a trekking bike or a MTB is recommended.

Numerous dining options along the way. Worth a visit: the Villa Romana in Veldenz, the castle ruins in Hunolstein, the Archaeological Educational Trail, or the replica of a Roman wine ship in Neumagen-Dhron.
