Since 2003, the holiday region Roman Wine Route has offered mountain bikers in the region a mountain bike trail network of more than 200 km. The guarantee for a nature- and environmentally friendly as well as athletically attractive route design was the intensive cooperation of the Trier Forestry Office, which developed the route proposals, as well as individual mountain bikers from the racing scene who approved the athletic attractiveness of the routes. In total, 5 routes were marked with lengths between 27.9 and 76.3 km. The fact that you do not necessarily have to go to the Alps to find an interesting mountain biking area is also demonstrated by the descriptions of the elevation differences covered during the individual routes. The altitude meters vary from 718 m to 2119 m. The individual routes, which lead over the foothills of the Eifel and Hunsrück, offer a lot of variety, repeatedly provide fantastic views into the Moselle valley, and lead as circular tours even foreign mountain bikers safely back to the starting point. The routes partly run through the world-famous vineyards Thörnicher Ritsch and Klüsserather Bruderschaft. Holiday mood sets in when you enjoy the beautiful landscape and compensate the lost fluids at the end of a route with an “Après-Bike”.

From the town center of Schweich you reach the route via Bahnhofstraße at the junction turning right into the street called Langfuhr. This leads under the railway overpass into the fields. In hilly terrain, you circumvent the Föhrener Ried nature reserve and reach Föhren after passing under the railway line. In the town you cross the main road before the railway bridge heading towards Naurath but stay on the bike path along the railway line leaving the town center and after a loop in the new development area reach the forest entrance at the town exit towards Erlenbach.
A gradual climb through the forest towards Naurath follows. At the entrance to Naurath you cycle right down into the town center, then turn left out of town and uphill into the forest. In a large bend you reach the highest point of the route (400 m above sea level), where you first cross a district road and finally a state road, which you turn left onto (heavy traffic, caution!), but after about 200 m you leave again to the right via a parking bay. Then you enter the forest and have a short single-trail descent here. You cross a paved forest road and continue on a root path section, then join another forest road and follow it downhill along a stream.
At the junction of the forest road with a district road, our path turns left over a parking lot, which you leave again uphill at the opposite end in the forest. After a gentle climb at first, which ends in a short, challenging section, the route leads downhill to the already experienced state road, which must again be crossed.
On the opposite side you first ride parallel to the road but leave it after about 200 m to immerse yourself in the depths of the Meulenwald for the rest of the tour. A gentle ascent follows, then a fast descent on well-developed forest roads past mighty Douglas firs. After constant, slight ups and downs and many changes of direction you reach the Moselle-side edge of the Meulenwald at the Steinkaulhütte and leave it via a fast single-trail descent, which ends in a sharp right curve at a valley-side parking lot. There is a renewed ascent into the slope of the forest area with the final descent to the Haardthof, where the state road to Föhren is crossed and then the railway line is passed under. Along the railway line it finally goes back to Schweich.
Nature and Mountain Biking
It is the greatest joy for mountain bikers to enjoy the charms of nature and landscape, the silence of the forests, and the variety of open countryside far from the traffic noise of busy roads, even off heavily frequented cycle paths.
The use of nature, whether as a lone touring cyclist or as a participant in a training group, must be coupled with the awareness that misbehavior can cause damage to forest and fields, flora, and fauna.
Reasonable general behavior and a few basic rules ensure that mountain biking does not become a nuisance.
A functional mountain bike and a bicycle helmet should of course be part of the standard equipment.
