Mundwaldrunde Wittlich (W6)

Highlights of the Mundwaldrunde (W6) around the Säubrennerstadt are the chapel of the Black Madonna, the Cross Chapel, and the Roman Villa on the Lieser riverbank.

Wittlich has two motorway connections: Wittlich West A 60, Wittlich Mitte A 1 / A 48.

Current timetables and prices are available on the website of the Trier transport region: www.vrt-info.de. It takes about 5 minutes on foot from the central bus station (ZOB) in Wittlich to the starting point at the historic market square.

There are plenty of free parking spaces at the Zentrum / Rommelsbach parking lot. Only the first 3 parking rows towards the city center are time-limited (3 hours) and can be used with a parking disc. From the parking lot, you can reach the start of the route in about 3 minutes on foot.

The 13 km long circular route to the Black Madonna and the Roman Villa starts at the Tourist Information on the historic market square in Wittlich. Up to the Cross Chapel at the edge of the forest, the route follows the marking of the Eifel-Camino; the entire circular route is marked with the code (W6). From the market square, it first goes over Pariser Platz through Trierer Straße to the Lieser Bridge / Trierer Landstraße. After crossing the bridge, turn left onto Römerstraße. After about 300 meters, turn right onto the street "Auf'm Geifen", passing the timelessly beautiful Bernhardskirche. The street "Auf'm Geifen" leads into "Klausener Weg"; turn left here and follow "Klausener Weg" to the outskirts of the city. After passing under the bridge, turn right onto the paved service road and "ascend". Soon the circular route reaches the chapel of the Black Madonna and the Cross Chapel. A few meters further into the Mundwald forest, then turn left and follow the marking (W6) through the forest. After a short time, the Hotel Vulcano Lindenhof is reached. Here, a stopover is recommended with breathtaking views over Wittlich and the Wittlich valley from the beautiful outdoor terrace. From the hotel, the circular route continues with the marking (W6), descending in serpentines past impressive sandstone cliffs to the Roman Villa on the Lieser riverbank. From the Roman Villa, the circular route follows the Lieser path towards the city center. This involves crossing the wooden bridge under the motorway, walking a stretch alongside the motorway until the paved bike path / Lieser path is reached. Along the riverbank, the route continues through the "Ohling" back into the city.

The paths in the forest and the switchback descent to the Roman Villa can be very slippery depending on weather conditions. Our recommendation: hiking poles and hiking shoes with good tread.

The Mundwaldrunde offers a good mix of cultural and natural experiences. The hiking enjoyment is completed with a stop at the Hotel Vulcano Lindenhof.
