Like a huge amphitheater, the Piesporter Moselbogen opens to the south and already impressed the Roman scholar Ausonius. In the interplay between the natural diversity of habitats and a wine-growing culture spanning millennia, many hundreds of plant and animal species have found a habitat here, some of which are considered rare and endangered. This makes the Mosel meander a "record-suspect" arch between humans and nature like no other. A shining example of an intact wine cultural landscape. As part of the "Living Mosel Vineyards Initiative," this area was designated as a "Spotlight of Biodiversity" in 2018.

This hike leads across vineyard and agricultural roads through the famous vineyard "Piesporter Goltröpfchen" and offers, alongside magnificent panoramic views, a special plant world as well as cultural sights along the Mosel riverbank.

Brief description

The approximately 7-kilometer circular hike runs in a bow shape through the famous vineyard "Piesporter Goldtröpfchen" and along the Mosel riverbank. In the steep slopes amid the rocks and walls, a rich flora and fauna have developed here.

Directions

From the community center at the Ausoniusufer in Piesport, you walk past the parish church St. Michael, along the Mosel riverbank to the bridgehead of the former Müstert bridge. Here the path leads you into the vineyards and up a few switchbacks. Passing the Michelskirche, right through the famous vineyard "Piesporter Goldtröpfchen," you cross the asphalted L 50 road, which winds up the Piesporter Berg in switchbacks. You continue parallel to the slope through the vineyard landscape - always with a view of Piesport and the Mosel. Eventually, the vineyard path ends. Via a path, you reach the agricultural road below and follow this for a few meters. Then you descend to the Mosel riverbank via an old vineyard staircase. The return route takes place on the bike or traffic path via the district of Ferres. Along the way at the edge of the vineyards, you encounter a unique plant world that has developed here. Among them are many early bloomers such as the vineyard hyacinth, wallflower, and hawthorn. Especially drought-resistant plants like maidenhair fern, houseleek, and vineyard leek also grow here. On the Mosel riverbank, on the other hand, there are cultural sights to visit, including the Rococo parish church St. Michael, the chapel in Ferres with the depiction "Christ in the Press," as well as the Roman press complex. While you hike through the vineyards partly on an unpaved agricultural road, you mostly stroll on asphalt along the Mosel riverbank.

The return journey follows the Mosel bike path: watch out for cyclists.

Buy packed lunch in Piesport and take a short break in the vineyards: the view of the rocky "Moselloreley" is worth a pause!
