Spectacular Views Between Saarburg and Kastel

A varied round-trip hike from Saarburg up to the impressive cultural and rocky plateau of Kastel-Staadt. Stunning views and exciting cultural highlights included.
The tour begins in Saarburg and initially follows the idyllic course of the Leukbach stream toward Trassem-Perdenbach. From there, the route leads up a gravel forest path to the impressive cultural and rocky plateau of Kastel-Staadt.

Once at the top, you’ll cycle through the village and reach the Klause, a state-designated historic site. Here, you’ll discover fascinating glimpses into the past: the Roman theater, the cemetery of honor, the Elisensitz, and the Klause itself, which offers a unique view of the Saar Valley.

After the tour, you’ll head back down to the Saar River toward Staadt. From there, follow the Saar Bike Path upstream to the Serrig weir. Here, you’ll cross the Saar and cycle along the opposite bank, past Serrig, on a leisurely ride back to Saarburg.

The tour combines magnificent views and fascinating cultural history into a varied e-bike loop with “royal vistas.”

Also suitable for gravel bikes.

The tour starts in Saarburg and initially follows the idyllic course of the Leukbach stream toward Trassem-Perdenbach. From there, the route leads up a gravel forest path to the impressive cultural and rocky plateau of Kastel-Staadt.

Once at the top, you’ll cycle through the village and reach the cultural plateau—a historic site with a special atmosphere.

Here, you’ll discover fascinating glimpses into the past: the Roman theater, the cemetery of honor, and the Elisensitz. The Elisensitz was the favorite spot of Crown Princess Elisabeth of Bavaria, who, incidentally, was the aunt and godmother of the famous Empress Sisi. She is the namesake of the lookout point.

Particularly impressive is the Klause, a state-protected historic site offering a unique view of the Saar Valley. The Klause is a historic rock complex high above the Saar, whose origins date back to the time of the Crusades and which was originally used by hermits. In the 19th century, Prussian King Frederick William IV had the complex converted by architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel into a Romantic burial chapel for King John of Bohemia.

A special new feature now enhances the experience at the Klause: the so-called “Jumpstone.” This sturdy jumping cube playfully combines physical activity with learning: Hopping on it activates an audio station that runs entirely on its own, without any external power source. Within a short time, an entertaining narrative about the history of the Klause unfolds.

Tip: Be sure to take the informative audio tour to experience the history of this unique place even more deeply.

Audio Tour: Here’s how it works: Download the “Lauschtour” smartphone app from the App Store or Google Play, then select the “Kulturplateau Kastel-Staadt” audio tour. When you start the tour, the content is saved to your smartphone, so you don’t need an internet connection while on the go.

After the tour, head back down into the Saar Valley to Staadt. From there, follow the Saar Bike Path upstream to the Serrig weir.

Here, cross the Saar and cycle along the right bank of the river, past Serrig, on a leisurely ride back to Saarburg.
