River-hopping and border experiences on the Sauertal Cycle Route
The starting point of the rail trail section on the Sauertal Cycle Route is Wasserbillig, the lowest point in Luxembourg. Through the vineyard landscape, the border river leads toward the first attractions: Between Metzdorf and Wintersdorf, the cycle path is elevated for about 200 meters to protect the valuable fauna and flora of the local wetland. A few kilometers further on is the 336-meter-long Ralinger Tunnel. A must is a stop in the abbey town of Echternach. On a detour to Bollendorf, you encounter an art and cultural history gem, the Baroque Schloss Weilerbach with its castle grounds. From here, you can either take the Sauertal RadBus back to Wasserbillig or continue via Wallendorf deeper into Luxembourg to Diekirch.

Sometimes on the Luxembourg side, sometimes on the German side, the cycle path follows the Sauer on its way from Wasserbillig via Echternach and Bollendorf to Ettelbrück (Luxembourg).
Bus:
Between Trier and Echternach runs the Sauertal RadBus (Line 260) (on/off stops: Trier central station - Ralingen - Minden - Irrel).

Train:
It is recommended to travel by train to Trier. From there, you can continue by Sauertal RadBus (Line 260) (on/off stops: Trier central station - Ralingen - Minden - Irrel).
The cycle path follows the Luxembourg-German border river Sauer on its last section to Wasserbillig. There, the Sauer flows into the Moselle. The Sauer valley is a small-scale river landscape shaped by water sports and many leisure activities, which is also family-friendly and accessible via the existing cycle paths in Luxembourg.
Characteristics
Consistently flat route both on this and the other side of the Sauer, on dedicated, paved paths, highlights include numerous bridges, a tunnel, and between Metzdorf and Wintersdorf a cycle path on a 200-meter-long elevated structure to protect the local flora and fauna; suitable for recreational cyclists.
Important note on signage: On the Luxembourg side, it is consistently signposted as "Piste-Cyclable-de-la-Basse-Sûr", and on the German side as "Sauer-Radweg".
