A free parking lot is available to you at the train station, about 400 meters from the start. Motorhomes can also be parked there. Another parking option (few spaces) is available at the August-Horch-Halle, near the entrance signpost to the wine trail.
The circular hiking trail takes you past some of the steepest vineyards. After about 5 kilometers, the shady but steep ascent begins in Bellthal. The hike is as varied as it is challenging. Sturdy footwear and good fitness are helpful for the 9-kilometer-long route. During the ambitious hike, 230 meters of elevation are climbed. The wine trail leads back to the starting point after 3.5 hours.
The Uhlen Wine Trail begins leisurely at the wine estate, passes historical buildings of the community, and meets the entrance signpost at Hamm-Weg. The next few kilometers run parallel to the Mosel and show steep vineyards, ancient dry stone walls, masonry round arches, a unique flora, and wonderful fauna. If you are lucky, the famous Mosel Apollo butterfly flies along the rocks between May and July in search of the plumed knapweed. It is worth taking in the highlights along the route, including sculptures by renowned artists. Passing under the Mosel valley bridge of the A 61, the large Uhlen amphitheater opens where globally unique wines are cultivated. The Uhlen is one of the most spectacular vineyards in Germany. Up to 29 terraces stack on top of each other. From Bellthal, the ascent (partly on the Moselsteig) demands full concentration before reaching the Mosel heights and leading through forest to the viewpoint “Blumslay.” The path goes under the motorway bridge (spectacularly) to the excavation site of a Roman “villa rustica” and from there back through the vineyards—always with a view of Winningen and the Mosel.

For your own safety and to protect the flora and fauna, please always stay on the marked paths. The hiking trail has partly steep, difficult, and slippery sections in rainy or winter weather. Therefore, sure-footedness and good fitness are essential prerequisites.

If you unexpectedly encounter a trail closure or detour, please observe the instructions for your own safety.
Danger situations:
If an emergency occurs, quick help is needed. And although mobile phones can send GPS signals, the classic rescue points often provide the fastest help. These are located at places easily accessible to rescue vehicles. Remember the points with the green signs and a white cross. In an emergency, return there and provide the number on the sign when you call for help. This lets rescuers know where to find you.
For the best hiking experience, we recommend following the designated hiking direction (see arrows on the map). Arrow signposts in the colors of the wine trails indicate the direction of travel along the way.
