The starting point of the hike is the Moselle village Ürzig. From here, the path leads through the "Ürziger Wurzgarten" vineyard and the theme garden of the same name. While the Moselle community was already first mentioned as Ursiacum in 700, the vineyard "Ürziger Wurzgarten" goes back to the 13th century. Ürzig is considered the winegrowing community with the highest steep vineyard portion in Germany.

From the town hall square, the path leads through Wurzgartenstraße into the "Ürziger Wurzgarten" vineyard towards Ürziger Höhe. After a detour through the forest, it continues through vineyards again, past a small chapel and the geogarden, and right through the rose and spice gardens. An experience for all senses. Right above the roofs of Ürzig, 160 plant species, 20 rose varieties, and numerous spices and herbs grow on a steep slope.

There are no refreshment opportunities on the way, but in Ürzig, there are restaurants and wine taverns (seasonal wine bars).

Brief description

Vines, rocks, and a garden full of spices await the hiker on this relatively short route with a very demanding ascent through vineyards and rocks to Ürziger Höhe.

Approach

Coming from Bernkastel, continue on the B53, passing through Zeltingen. At the roundabout take the 3rd exit towards Cochem/Ürzig/Wittlich - over the bridge. At the roundabout take the 3rd exit towards Kloster Machern and Ürzig. Arrive in Ürzig.

Directions

From the town hall square, the path leads you through Wurzgartenstraße to the cemetery and then into the well-known vineyard. Passing the "Wurzgarten" sign, you first walk uphill on an asphalted service road, then on a narrow path parallel to the slope. It becomes really strenuous when you climb the mountain zigzagging on a section of the "Erdener Klettersteig" (the path branches off shortly before a white bench). After a few altitude meters, a bench with a protective roof invites you to rest. From here, you continue hiking towards Ürziger Höhe: the houses of Ürzig that cling to the mountain. You cross the district road and walk parallel on a forest path to the village. On Bergstraße, which connects the houses in the valley with those on Ürzig's heights, you walk a few meters downhill before the path branches off to the right. Immediately right again, the path leads you into an unpaved hollow way, which was already used by the Romans, going downhill. Where the path turns into a paved road, you turn into the forest and pass a bridge and a shelter. The path leads uphill to a transmission mast. Then you walk again through vineyards and in a curve - past a small chapel and the geogarden - back in the direction of Ürzig. Above the houses, you descend through the theme gardens, the rose garden, and the spice garden.

Safety instructions

The hiker should be free from dizziness in the first section of the hike through the Ürziger Wurzgarten vineyard. When wet (rainy weather), it can be very slippery here.

Equipment

Sturdy footwear and packed lunch.

Tips

The route is relatively short, so you should take some time for the theme garden with its roses and perennials.
