Anyone who has always wanted to know everything about wine growing on the Rhine is exactly right on this scenic educational trail. The hiker can learn right where the good drops are grown and at the same time enjoy the wonderful view.
Impressive and beautiful hiking trail through the vineyard at Bopparder Hamm.
The railway crossing "Peternach" is easily accessible by car across the federal road B9 from the direction of Boppard as well as from the direction of Spay.
Alternatively, you can also park your car at the picnic area of Weingut Weingarts. However, the number of spaces is limited here.
The start and end point of this path is the large wine barrel on the B 9 at the railway crossing "Peternach". It leads 11.3 kilometers long over continuously paved paths. One can convince oneself on the Bopparder wine educational trail that the work of the Boppard winemakers is still hard labor despite extensive land consolidations. The path leads through different sites such as Fässerlay, Mandelstein, Weingrube, and Feuerlay. Particularly interesting are the different vine training methods, from single stake training to wire frame and the Trier Wheel, which are found here in close proximity. The Hamm is also famous for its almost Mediterranean microclimate. From the heights, there is a unique view of the Rhine course with the largest loop of the Rhine and the adjoining towns Osterspai, Filsen, and Boppard. Along the way, benches and rest areas invite you to take breaks. Numerous information boards along the wine educational trail provide information about wine and viticulture in Hamm (hamus = Latin: the bow). At the end, a detour to the many wine taverns and inns of Boppard is recommended to enjoy the Riesling or other growths of Bopparder Hamm.
For your own safety and to protect the flora and fauna, please always stay on the marked paths. The hiking trail has partly steep, difficult, and slippery sections during rain or winter weather. Therefore, surefootedness and good physical condition are essential prerequisites.

These are located at spots that are easily accessible by rescue vehicles. Remember the points with the green signs and a white cross. In case of emergency, return there and give the number on the sign when calling for help. This way, rescuers will know where to find you.
- Sturdy and comfortable footwear.
- Clothing adapted to the weather, if necessary in a layering system.
- Backpack with provisions: enough to drink and possibly food, as not everywhere offers dining or shopping options or they may be closed.
- Depending on the weather, sun or rain protection, as well as mosquito/tick protection.
When visiting the winemakers in Spay and Boppard, what you've just learned can also be applied in practice with a good glass of wine.
