Biodiversity Week

The Mosel wine-growing region, with its unique steep slopes and terraced vineyards, is a habitat for many plants and animals, some of which are extremely rare. The aim of the campaign week in May is to convey this unique feature to our local residents and visitors. Throughout the Mosel region, there will be a special programme of events, walks and cultural highlights, inviting visitors to be captivated by the charm of our region and its remarkable biodiversity.

The region along the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer rivers is one of Europe’s most beautiful river landscapes – we are all familiar with the magnificent views of this stunning countryside. The unique geological and climatic conditions not only produce some of the world’s finest Riesling wines – this cultural landscape is also home to many rare species of flora and fauna. It is the combination of these two elements – the breathtaking scenery and the exceptional biodiversity – that makes this region so fascinating.

Under the slogan ‘Biodiversity Rocks the Mosel’, every May during Biodiversity Week you can enjoy a very special programme of events, walks and cultural highlights in this breathtaking Mosel landscape. Visitors, locals, children and adults alike will find something to suit them in these lovingly organised events and can experience the Mosel and its impressive biodiversity with all their senses.

Biodiversity Week is a labour of love for the “Living Mosel Vineyards” project run by DLR Mosel. In collaboration with nature guides, exciting projects – such as the ‘Biodiversity Hotspots’ award scheme, the creation of themed trails and the construction of wildlife towers – have helped raise awareness of biodiversity along the Moselle.
